Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Kendall Patrick hit his first homer of the year, propelling the Traverse City Beach Bums(8-13) to a 5-4 win over the Schaumburg Boomers(8-14).

The Beach Bums brought nine men to the plate in the first inning, scoring four runs, to get off to a fast start. Ryan Bottger and Steven Patterson each singled, then Jose Vargas hit an RBI double to drive in Bottger. Will Kengor then followed with a 2 run single to right to bring in Patterson and Vargas. Kendall Patrick rounded out the big inning with an RBI single to center to plate Kengor.

After a scoreless second, Schaumburg started to chip away at the lead. Starting off the comeback in the third inning was Jordan Dean with a 2-run double that drove home Justin Byrd and Josh Gardiner, cutting the Bums' advantage in half. Ino Patron slammed a triple into the right field gap with one out in the fourth, then, James Keller drove him in with an RBI single to right, pulling Schaumburg within one. In the sixth, Mikal Hill, Patron, and Keller each singled with one out to load the bases. With a full count, Gardiner walked to tie the game at four.

Leading off the ninth inning, Kendall Patrick stepped to the plate and rocked a 3-1 pitch deep down the left field line. The only question was, fair or foul? After it cleared the wall, the home plate umpire signaled fair ball and home run, to give the Bums a 5-4 lead heading into the ninth.

Closer Andrew Brockett came into the game for his first save attempt of the season and hurled a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts. Benjamin Libuda went two innings of relief to earn his first win of the season, not allowing a baserunner while striking out one. Rob Blanc got the start and was solid through five innings. He allowed three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six. Ken Knudsen, who gave up the Patrick homer, suffers the loss for his first decision of the season.
