Newark Pilots News Release
The Cooperstown Hawkeyes (4-5) defeated the Newark Pilots (4-6) in extra innings on Saturday night by a final score of 5-4 at Colburn Park in Newark, N.Y.
Newark began the game with leads of 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth and 3-1 in the sixth. Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) knocked in the first run of the game with a RBI single in the first inning. Chase Brown (UT-Dallas) slapped a double into center field, allowing Edwin Reyes (UAB) to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
Cooperstown's Coleman Barron (Davidson) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth. The Hawkeyes then tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Alex Meadow (Wesleyan) scored on a wild pitch from Newark reliever Alec Clifton (Lindenwood). Gaby Ramirez (Wagner) later scored on the RBI walk to tie the contest.
Still tied at 3-3 after nine innings of regulation, the Hawkeyes eyed the win in the top of the 10th with a solo homerun from shortstop Tynan Pedretti (Merced). Cooperstown then turned the 6-4-3 double play to start the bottom of the frame.
With two outs, Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge) gave the Pilots some life with a solo shot of his own down the left field line. The Hawkeyes eventually scored the game-winner when Ben Manlove (Chico State) touched home on Brandon Palmer's (King) RBI single right back at Newark pitcher Jim Glasgow (Lewis).
Parker Ray (Texarkana) earned the win for Cooperstown, striking out five over the final three overtime innings. Bryan Aanderud (Cypress) led the Hawkeyes with two hits while Meadow had a team-high two runs. Glasgow was tagged with the loss for Newark. Attl finished the game 3-4 at the plate, including his first long ball of the season.
The Pilots are home again on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game against the Watertown Wizards. The Hawkeyes return home as they host the Elmira Pioneers for a 1 p.m. contest.
