Papierski Homers, River Cats' Comeback Bid Falls Short

Sacramento River Cats News Release

Tacoma, Wash. - Down 6-1 in the top of the sixth, catcher Michael Papierski powered a comeback attempt that fell just short as the Sacramento River Cats (24-39) lost 6-5 to the host Tacoma Rainiers (26-36) on Thursday.

Starting with shortstop Donovan Walton's one-out double, the River Cats rallied to plate three runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to get within one.

Papierski's RBI single and second baseman Isan Díaz's RBI walk made it 6-3 before a balk by left-hander Danny Young plated third baseman Jason Vosler.

Two innings later, Papierski lined his third home run of the season, second with the River Cats, to make it 6-5.

Sacramento could not find the tying run, however, going down in order in the ninth against right-hander Matt Brash to end the game.

The comeback bid would not have been possible if not for impressive efforts out of the bullpen from right-hander Taylor Williams and lefty Joey Marciano.

A native of Vancouver, Washington, Williams struck out two while allowing just one hit in 2.0 innings against his former organization. Marciano followed that up with two punch outs in a shutout eighth, lowering his season ERA to 2.36.

Left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus (1-1, 4.59) looks to break the three-game skid. He'll take on a Tacoma TBD at 7:05 p.m. (PT) on Friday. Listen to Johnny Doskow call the game online at rivercats.com or on the MiLB First Pitch app.

Additional Notes

Rehabbing San Francisco right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (0-1) was not as sharp as his first outing for Sacramento (3.0 shutout innings). The 32-year-old struck out two while allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.

Sacramento originally went up 1-0 in the first when Vosler singled up the middle to plate right fielder Heliot Ramos, who had his second two-hit game of the series. Former River Cats infielder Kevin Padlo immediately responded for the Rainiers, singling to left field for a 2-1 Tacoma lead.
