Brantford Bulldogs News Release

PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO. Following a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory over the OHL leading Ottawa 67s on Saturday afternoon, the Hamilton Bulldogs took to the road to square off with the Peterborough Petes featuring old friends Avery Hayes & Gavin White for a Sunday matinee.

Early in the first period, J.R. Avon won a puck in neutral ice and flew ahead on a breakaway only to be denied by a tremendous Matteo Drobac stop, but as the puck was cleared around to the right point, Samuel Mayer launched a shot through a moving screen in front of the Hamilton goal to take a 1-0 lead at 1:18. With the Bulldogs on the power-play Nick Lardis and Sahil Panwar each set the other for opportunities with the puck exploding off Lardis' forehand while Panwar's right circle one-timer just missed catching the far side post. The Petes doubled their lead on the power-play at 16:14 as Tucker Robertson from the right point fed the puck back- door for Avery Hayes to tip past Drobac, recording his 33rd of the season. The Bulldogs had a bit of a scary moment at the end of the opening period as J.R. Avon on a rush to the Bulldogs net bounced off a Sahil Panwar check and slid into Matteo Drobac, hitting Drobac in a tough spot and keeping the Bulldogs goaltender down momentarily, though he was able to stay in the game with the Bulldogs trailing 2-0 through 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs mounted an incredible comeback in the middle frame, but it was the Petes who opened the scoring in the period as Gavin White fed Connor Lockhart for an initial shot on the power-play, which Drobac stopped, only to have Tucker Robertson hop on the rebound to make it 3-0 at 6:44. The comeback trail for Hamilton began at 7:34 on a power-play of their own as Jorian Donovan fed Sahil Panwar right who looped a shot through a screen for his 14th of the season to get the Dogs on the board. Just :50 seconds later, Donovan fed Panwar forward into the offensive zone, dropping the puck back to Cole Brown who with sniper's touch hit the top corner over Michael Simpson for his 12th of the season at 8:24. Peterborough returned to the attack at 8:59 with Avery Hayes besting Matteo Drobac from the left circle for his 2nd of the game and 34th of the season to put the Petes up 4-2. Undeterred, at 11:12, Patrick Thomas worked the puck from the left-wing corner to Sahil Panwar, working the puck back to Artem Grushnikov at the left point for a drive that eluded Simpson for the import defender's 6th of the season getting the Bulldogs back to within one at 4-3. Hamilton pulled even at 14:59 as Jorian Donovan from the middle of the blueline spread the puck left to Sahil Panwar who hit Nick Lardis with a cross-seam pass at the top of the right circle for a one-timer that beat Simpson for his 21st of the season, tying the game 4-4 and giving Panwar, his 4th, and Donovan, his 3rd point of the period.

The final frame was all Bulldogs, beginning with a power-play breakout at 8:53 with Jorian Donovan feeding the puck up the right-wing side to Sahil Panwar who beat Simpson five-hole for his 2nd goal & 5th point of the game Donovan recording his 4th on the assist to give the Bulldogs their first lead 5-4. At 14:15 Marek Vanacker stole the puck behind the Peterborough net, feeding Cole Brown in the slot for Brown's 2nd of the game & 13th of the season doubling the Hamilton lead to 6-4. Finally with the Peterborough net empty at 17:17 and Hamilton shorthanded, Patrick Thomas cleared the puck down the rink where Lawson Sherk popped it into the yawning cage to secure a 7-4 Bulldogs victory.

The Hamilton Bulldogs return home to host the Niagara IceDogs on Friday, February 3rd at FirstOntario Centre with a 7:00pm puck drop.
