Bay Area Panthers News Release
The Panthers are bringing in a wide receiver with a track record of production with the signing of former Georgetown standout Joshua Tomas.
Following his senior season in 2022, Tomas was named the FCS statistical champion for receptions and receiving yards per game. He ended the year with 100 catches for 1231 yards on the way to being named Associated Press Third Team All-American.
"JT produced elite numbers against his competition in college," said Bay Area Head Coach Rob Keefe. "He is as natural a pass catcher as you will find and is an excellent ball tracker with a big competitive drive on each snap."
While putting up individual numbers, Tomas didn't have much team success at Georgetown. Signing with the defending IFL champions is an opportunity he does not take for granted.
"Winning is everything to me. To be able to get that call from an organization that just won the championship means a lot," said Tomas. "That means that the coaches must see something in me and have some kind of belief that I can come in and be a contributing factor to the team. It means the world to me."
Tomas participated in Maryland's pro day and later had a tryout with CFL's Edmonton Elks. The consensus among the experts is the talent is there. The next step is to refine the skills against quality competition.
"A lot of the NFL scouts told me after my pro day that they wanted to see me compete on a professional platform. Just get into a situation where I can get some exposure and do what I do best. I want to be the best teammate I can be and execute the plan," said Tomas.
So, when Keefe reached out, the pieces fell into play to sign with the Panthers.
"He was explaining to me the guys who have gone on to a higher level so that makes it a situation I want to take advantage of," said Tomas.
Immersion in the new playbook continues Tomas's propensity for study. Hitting the books was instilled in him at an early age.
"My parents always made that a priority. I couldn't do anything without bringing home good grades. I wasn't allowed to bring home a C," said Tomas. "I was in high school and finally got my first C and got in trouble for it. I never wanted to go back there again. They made sure my priorities were straight and made it clear I couldn't perform on the field if I couldn't perform in the classroom."
At Georgetown, Tomas was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll along with being selected First-Team All-Patriot League for what he did on the field. Tomas was named a two-time all-state academic selection in high school.
School is once again in session for Tomas who will make his IFL debut with a combination of talent and preparation.
"I've been doing as much research as I can and had my first experience with forward motion with my CFL tryout. I'm already coming full speed and the defensive backs are stationary. It's set up for me to run right past them. I watched last year's games on YouTube and saw a lot of elusiveness and speed. That's where I come in. I look forward to getting onboard and helping that ship sail," said Tomas.
