Bay Area Panthers News Release
The Panthers continue to stockpile talent before training camp with the signings of defensive back Desmond Williams from Weber State and former Alcorn State running back Stadford Anderson.
Williams spent three years with the Wildcats after starting his career at Boise State. As a senior in 2022, Williams was named All-Big Sky Conference for the second time, starting all 12 games and serving as a team captain. Among his season highlights were his 13 tackle effort against Sacramento State and a 33-yard interception return for a score in the FBS win over Utah State.
"Desmond is an athletic, intuitive and physical football player," said Head Coach Rob Keefe. "His versatility will be on full display all over the field for us this year."
His success came after overcoming a pair of ACL injuries in 2019 and 2021.
"I believe everything happens for a reason," said Williams. "It's just part of my journey; part of the story."
Williams was a three-star prospect coming out of Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., finishing No. 2 in the final MaxPreps national team ranking as a senior.
Anderson was a player targeted by Keefe last year but was focused on workouts to prepare for the XFL and the CFL. He's now ready to jump in after getting a ringing endorsement of the franchise by former Alcorn State quarterback Felix Harper who is entering his second year with the Panthers.
"He was telling me about how good of an opportunity it was," said Anderson. "How he enjoyed it, had fun and how well they treat the players. He gave me a really good perspective on everything."
As a senior in 2021, Anderson suffered an MCL injury in the first game that put him on the sidelines for three games. He says he played maybe five games with good health. Anderson still finished second on the team in rushing and averaged almost five yards a carry.
"Stadford is a physical, explosive running back," said Keefe. "His combination of power and speed is exactly why he was difficult to stop in college."
In rounding out his resume, Anderson is more than just a back to take handoffs. Workout videos show soft hands and the ability to use space, making him a factor in the passing game.
"I move well for my size and can get open," said Anderson. "The game has evolved from the old school football of just 'ground and pound.' With a dual threat offense you have to be versatile and I feel like I could bring to the table what's needed to thrive."
