Paniagua, Simmons Lift Revs to Sweep over Crabs

(York, Pa.) - A three-run sixth inning stood up for the York Revolution, who swept a three-game series from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs with a 5-3 win on Thursday afternoon at PeoplesBank Park. A season-high Baseball in Education crowd of 4,892 saw the Revs (20-14) come from behind twice to beat the Blue Crabs (11-22).

Down 3-2 in the sixth, Michael Burgess cranked a leadoff home run to right field to tie it. Then after a couple groundouts, James Simmons laced a two-out double to bring up Salvador Paniagua. Paniagua added to his legend with a long single off the Arch Nemesis, plating Simmons to give the Revs the lead. Josh Wilson followed with his own double off the big wall, and Paniagua scored on a throwing error by shortstop Steve Lombardozzi to make it 5-3.

York made the runs stand up for James Simmons (4-1), who turned in a quality start with six innings of three-run, eight-hit ball. He walked one, hit one, and struck out two on 79 pitches.

Mariel Checo and Frank Gailey combined for a perfect seventh inning, while Ty'Relle Harris took care of the eighth in similar fashion. Mike DeMark slammed the door with his league-leading 11th save of the year.

For the second straight game the Blue Crabs struck with two runs in the top of the first on RBI singles by Zach Wilson and D'Arby Myers. York wasted no time getting on the comeback trail, as Michael Rockett laced a one-out double and Telvin Nash cranked his 11th home run to deep left center to knot it up at 2-2.

Southern Maryland retook the lead on Wilson's sac fly in the fifth inning, setting up the big sixth for the home side.

Nash led the way for the Revs, going 2-for-5 with the two-run homer. Paniagua went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for his first multi-hit game of the year.

Wilson paced the Blue Crab attack, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Lombardozzi went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Notes: York has now won 14 of its last 17 games against Southern Maryland dating back to a four-game sweep at PeoplesBank Park last August. The Revolution smashed its Atlantic League-best 36th and 37th home runs of the season in its 34th game; it took until the team's 65th game last season to hit 37 home runs. Nash now has 24 home runs in his first 97 games as a Rev dating back to last season, the second-fastest to reach that mark in franchise history (Chris Nowak, 81). The Revs have won a season-high-tying five straight at home. Tony Pena gets the nod for the Revs to open a four-game series against the Somerset Patriots, who will throw Jeremy Horst on Friday night.
