Pals Pitches Well, Cards Win 7-3

April 27, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals used three home runs to help Jordan Pals win his second decision of the year, as the Cards beat the Corpus Christi Hooks 7-3 on Thursday night at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. With the win, the Cards are back over the .500 mark by seven games for just the second time in franchise history at a Texas League best 14-7.

Juan Richardson's first home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field gave Springfield the lead for good in the second inning at 2-0. Richardson finished the game with two hits, his first multi-hit game this season.

Corpus Christi answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame, as Josh Bonifay's solo shot to right field made it 2-1.

The Cards took advantage of two walks by Hooks starter Juan Gutierrez (1-1) and an error in the third to go up 4-1. With Mike McCoy at third and Rico Washington at second with one out, Brian Martin grounded a chopper to third baseman Josh Bonifay. His throw home was all the way to the backstop though, as both McCoy and Washington scored.

Corpus Christi got an unearned run in the bottom of the third against Pals, making it 4-2.

The Cardinals answered in their next at-bat though, as Kevin Estrada, who finished 2-4 on the night, homered to right field for the first time this season, making it 5-2.

The Hooks picked up another run in the seventh, when they finally chased Jordan Pals. Pals walked Jared Sandberg to open the inning and was then removed after striking out Osvaldo Fernando. Rich Scalamandre came out of the pen, but couldn't strand the inherited runner, allowing a two-out infield single to Josh Anderson. On the play, Sandberg scored from third, making it 5-3.

In the ninth, Reid Gorecki got on track with his first hit of the series, a two-run blast to left field, his Texas League-leading ninth of the year, making it 7-3.

Those extra runs were important, as Mark Worrell came out of the bullpen and struggled a bit with his control, walking consecutive hitters with one out. After earning his second strike out by fanning Hunter Pence, Worrell got J.R. House to ground out to third baseman Rico Washington, securing the 7-3 victory.

Pals (2-0) earned the win by allowing three runs, just two earned on five hits over 6 1/3 innings.

The Cardinals continue their seven-game road trip on Friday night from Corpus Christi. Cardinal right-hander Chris Lambert (2-1) looks for his second straight win, while Corpus Christi sends Matt Albers (2-1) to the hill at 7:05pm. The Cardinals will return to Hammons Field on Thursday, May 4th, as they open up a seven-game home stand.
