Palm Beach Continues to Struggle to Start Second Half

July 1, 2023 - Florida State League (FSL)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

The Palm Beach Cardinals continued to struggle to get things going offensively and defensively in an 11-3 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Starter Jose Davila got off to a good start. The righty made quick work in the first, allowing no baserunners. Davila then allowed five runs over the next two innings. The Venezuelan tossed another inning and a third, bringing his total up to four and a third, and allowed an unearned run. He ended the night allowing seven hits and two walks to go with five earned runs and one unearned and no strikeouts. Augusto Calderon tossed the next two and two thirds' innings. The Dominican allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two batters. Next, Henry Gomez started relatively well. The righty allowed one inherited runner to score in his first inning, but ended the inning before much damage could be done. The next inning, Gomez could not record an out, walking four batters to start the inning before being pulled. Tanner Jacobson struggled with control in his attempt to finish the ninth inning. He walked two batters and allowed two runs to score, both credited to Henry Gomez.

The offense did not play much better. Leonardo Bernal was a bright spot, recording three singles with an RBI and a run scored. Joshua Baez was the other player to account for runs, blasting a two-run homer 109 mph off the bat, his third homerun of the series. Aside from the three and four hitters, Lizandro Espinoza hit a double, but nothing came of the runner in scoring position. In total, Palm Beach was 1-6 with runners in scoring position, which is tough to win with when the Hammerheads had 17 at bats with runners in scoring position.

The Cardinals and Hammerheads will play again at 12:00 pm on July 2nd. There will be no fans in attendance, as Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium prepares for the start of Mega Bash on July 3rd. There will be postgame fireworks, a Mega Kids Area, Inflatables, and so much more. Get tickets here.
