Colorado Eagles News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads defeated the Colorado Eagles, 4-3, in overtime to take Game 1 of their best-of-seven Western Conference Quarterfinals series. The Steelheads battled back all night -- with the help of two odd goals -- before scoring just 26 seconds into overtime to end the game.

The Eagles were the better team in the opening period, out-shooting the Steelheads, 17-8, and taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Trent Daavettila got the game's opening goal at 17:19 when he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated into the offensive zone and beat Josh Robinson from the left circle.

Colorado generated another strong edge in shots in the second stanza, out-shooting Idaho, 13-6. The frame opened with a series of penalties, but neither team was able to take advantage of their power play chances.

Seven and a half minutes into the second, Aaron Schneekloth's outlet attempt deflected off the skate of fellow defenseman Collin Bowman and past Adam Brown for an own-goal that tied the game at 1.

But six and a half minutes later, Arthur Bidwill sent a great pass from blue line to blue line to spring Greg Gardner down the left wing. Gardner side-stepped a defender with a nice move in the left circle and circled behind the net before sending the puck into the high slot where Jake Marto was able to blast it past Robinson's glove to put Colorado back on top, 2-1.

Idaho tied the game back up at 2 just two minutes into the third period on another fluky goal when Justin Taylor beat Brown on a shot from well inside the neutral zone. The Eagles battled back to take the lead again at 11:49, however, when Kyle Ostrow put home his own rebound with a backhander from the low slot.

But the Steelheads knotted the back-and-forth affair back up at 3 at 15:40 when David de Kastrozza was able to stuff the puck past Brown's right toe against the left post. Neither team tallied the rest of the period, sending the game into overtime.

The extra frame lasted just 26 seconds before Tyler Gron ended it by putting home a rebound from the doorstep. The teams will meet again Thursday night before the series moves to Colorado this weekend for games 3 & 4 (Saturday & Sunday).
