Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID (8/21/13) - Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Brad Ralph announced Wednesday that the Idaho Steelheads have agreed to terms with rookie defensemen Tyler Elbrecht and Mike Beck.
Elbrecht, 24, played college hockey at Minnesota State, the same college program that produced former Steelhead standout Kael Mouillierat. Elbrecht spent the past two seasons as the squad's captain, appearing in a total of 142 games during his four-year stint at Minnesota State. In that time, the 6-foot-4 defenseman scored three goals and added 24 assists.
Ralph on Elbrecht: "Tyler comes from a great program. He's a big, strong kid who stays at home defensively and also sticks up for his teammates. Great 'character' kid, he'll be a strong leader."
The 27-year-old Beck has spent the past two seasons in Europe after a four-year college career at the University of New Hampshire. He totaled 63 points (13 goals, 50 assists) in 83 games in Sweden and Norway after wrapping up his career at UNH. During his season in Sweden ('11-'12), he led the league in assists for a defenseman (30) and points for a defenseman (35).
Ralph on Beck: "Mike is a solid, two-way defenseman who will see ice time in all situations. The drive is there to prove himself and we think he'll be a big, big addition to our defense corps."
The addition of Elbrecht and Beck give Ralph six defensemen on his current training camp roster: Elbrecht, Beck, James Isaacs, Connor Goggin, Colin Dueck and Dalton Reum. Training camp opens in Boise in early October.
Idaho opens the regular season on October 18 at Utah . The team's home opener is Wednesday, October 23, at CenturyLink Arena in Boise against the San Francisco Bulls.
