Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, Va. - The Danville Braves completed their sweep of the Bluefield Orioles tonight with a 4-0 win at American Legion Post 325 Field. With their third-straight victory, the D-Braves keep first place in their grasp with a record of 24-18, and improve to 5-1 against Bluefield this season. The sweep puts the Orioles at 14-28 in 2010 and in last in the Appalachian League East.
Coming off of his first win of the season on July 28 against the Bristol White Sox, where he tallied a season and team-most 13 strike outs, lefty Ronan Pacheco came in looking for his second-consecutive W, and to give the Braves the sweep. Pacheco immediately went to work wowing Danville fans and silencing Bluefield bats as he kept the Orioles hitless into the third inning.
Not letting their starting hurler's hard work go to waste, D-Braves batters went to work in the second inning, after being shut down in order in the first. After a lead-off ground out by designated hitter Evan Gattis, the next five Danville batters all singled, with shortstop Elmer Reyes and left fielder Kenny Fleming chipping in the first two runs of the game.
After Bluefield starter Angel Cespedes was finally able to escape the inning, the D-Braves went on the attack again, with a two-bagger by second baseman Barrett Kleinknecht kicking off the third round of Braves at-bats. Two outs later, Kleinknecht was driven home on an RBI double by third baseman Joey Terdoslavich.
Trailing 3-0 into the fifth inning, the O's finally got on the board courtesy of an RBI single by second baseman Dudley Leonora that scored shortstop Jonathan Schoop. That would be the only run allowed by Pacheco, however, as he exited the game after the seventh with the score 3-1.
With reliever Andy Deain entering the game in the eighth for Cespedes, the righty quickly found himself in trouble after a lead-off double by Terdoslavich. After catcher Ryan Delgado reached on a fielder's choice, Reyes took the opportunity to extend Danville's lead thanks to a double of his own that drove the catcher in from first base. Replacing Deain with two outs, Cory Ast took the mound for the second time in the series, and quickly notched a strike out to end the inning.
Chasen Shreve relieved fellow lefty Pacheco in the eighth, and recorded his first out with his first pitch on a ground out by center fielder Brenden Webb. Despite walking two in his two innings of work, Shreve struck out three, finalizing the win when Schoop grounded into a double play.
In his seven-inning start, his longest of the season, Pacheco earned his second win after allowing only one run, recording four hits, walks and strike outs on the night. Fresh off the disabled list, Shreve got his first win of the season after entering the game with a two-run advantage. Cespedes took the loss on the night after allowing three runs, all earned, on ten hits.
Offensively, the strike out of the night for the D-Braves was also the last out of their night at the plate, when Fleming struck out swinging to end the eighth. Terdoslavich, solid in the series with Bluefield at 5-for-8 combined, went 3-4 tonight, with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Schoop had the best outing in the Orioles' line up, going 1-3 with a run, double and walk on the evening.
Following the league-wide off-day tomorrow, the Braves will head to Kingsport for a three-game series with the Mets on Aug. 5-7. After a one-game stint in Burlington on Sunday, the D-Braves will return home for their second match-up of the season with the Bristol White Sox. The three-game home series kicks off on Aug. 9.
