GREENEVILLE, TN - The Johnson City Cardinals defeated the Greeneville Astros by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday night at Pioneer Park and completed a three-game sweep. The Cardinals (26-16) now hold a six-game advantage over the Astros (20-22) in the race for the second playoff spot in the West Division.

The Cardinals struck first in the top of the third inning. With two outs and a runner at second, Johnson City scored a run on three consecutive hits from Cody Stanley, Philip Cerreto, and Romulo Ruiz to put them up 3-0.

The Astros got a solo homerun from Rafael Valenzuela, his first as a professional, in the fourth inning. That made the score 3-1, and it remained that way until the seventh.

In the top half of that inning, Philip Cerreto gave the Cardinals another RBI-single to extend their lead to 4-1.

The Astros, however, made it a game in the bottom half. After two straight strikeouts to begin the inning, the Astros got back-to-back base hits from Ryan Humphrey and Ricardo Garcia. Then, Jonathan Merritt got hit by a pitch to load the bases. When Chris Wallace, the very next batter, also got hit by a pitch, the Astros scored a run. Finally, a wild pitch allowed Greeneville to score a second run before ending the inning with another strikeout.

Johnson City added one more run in the ninth off an Oscar Taveras RBI-double to conclude the scoring.

Cardinals' starter Angel DeJesus (2-1) got the win as he pitched five innings, had three strikeouts, and gave up one run on three hits.

The Astros will have Wednesday off before travelling to Princeton for a three-game series with the Rays. That will be followed by a single game at the Kingsport Mets before returning home on Monday, August 9th against the Elizabethton Twins.
