(WOODBRIDGE, VA) - The Potomac Nationals were unable to play spoiler to the Kinston Indians in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon and were swept in both games by the scores of 5-3 and 2-1.
In Game One, the P-Nats sent Evan Bronson to the hill and he ran into trouble early. The Indians plated one run in the first on a bases loaded walk, and three more runs in the second including a two-run homer by Adam Abraham. After two innings, Potomac dug themselves a 4-0 hole.
Jose Lozada quickly responded in the third inning with a two-run double, scoring Francisco Soriano and Cutter Dykstra, which cut Kinston's lead in half.
Both squads traded runs in the sixth inning: Kinston received help from an errant pickoff attempt by Bronson and Lozada struck again for the Nationals when he smashed his sixh homer of the year, a solo shot to right field.
Both teams went quietly in the seventh and final inning and the game ended 5-3. Kinston's starter Toru Murata (3-2) earned the win, Bronson (5-5) got the loss and Preston Guilmet received his league-leading 35th save.
Mitchell Clegg toed the rubber for Potomac in the second game for the first time since June 10, and quickly found himself in a pitchers duel with counterpart Michael Goodnight. For the K-Tribe, Goodnight retired 13 of the first 16 batters and Clegg tossed four hitless innings for the P-Nats.
Clegg's no-hitter bid was broken up in the fifth when Casey Frawley led the inning off with a double to left-center. The next batter, Jordan Casas, bunted a single and third baseman, Justin Bloxom, threw the ball into the P-Nats bullpen in right field, which scored Frawley. Clegg got out of the inning without further damage.
The Indians increased their lead to 2-0 an inning later on Frawley's RBI single. In the bottom half of the frame, the Nats responded with an RBI single by Bloxom, which scored Eury Perez.
In the seventh, Potomac showed signs of a comeback when Brian Peacock led the inning off with a double to right and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately, the P-Nats were unable to plate the tying run and fell by the score of 2-1.
Goodnight (1-0) got the win, Clegg (5-6) received the loss and Trey Haley got credit for his first save of the season.
