Salem Red Sox News Release

Myrtle Beach, SC (September 4, 2011) - After being dealt an early 2-0 deficit, the Salem Sox stormed back on Sunday night, scoring twice each in the fourth, fifth, and eighth innings to prevail 6-2 over Myrtle Beach, Salem's third straight win and fourth in the last five games. Matt Spring went 2-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI single, and Heiker Meneses hammered a clutch two-run double to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth, making a winner of Anthony Ranaudo, who improved to 5-5 with five strong innings on the mound in his final start of 2011.

Ranaudo would have delivered five scoreless innings if not for a pair of two-out run-producing hits in the early innings. In the second, Chris McGuiness drilled an 0-2 pitch into right field to plate Mike Olt and lift Myrtle Beach to a 1-0 lead. The advantage doubled in the third, when Leury Garcia and Andrew Clark tag-teamed on consecutive doubles to give the Pelicans a 2-0 edge.

Salem had little early success against Pelican starter Kennil Gomez, who retired ten of the first 11 he faced through three and a third innings. But Bryce Brentz smashed a single into left and Spring followed it up with a two-run dinger, his sixth home run in 23 Carolina League ballgames, to tie the game at two.

One inning later, Peter Hissey and Josue Peley both singled with nobody out, but both remained at first and second with two away. Meneses ensured that Salem would not squander the opportunity, drilling a liner into the left-center field gap to bring both baserunners home and surge Salem to a 4-2 lead.

In the eighth, Meneses reached on an error and moved to third on Brentz' second single of the night. Spring lined a base hit to center to bring home Meneses and give the Red Sox a three-run lead, while Miles Head contributed an RBI single two batters later, putting the Sox on top 6-2.

The Pelicans mustered baserunners in every inning against the Red Sox bullpen, but the duo of Dennis Neuman and T.J. Hose combined to deal four scoreless innings in relief of Ranaudo. Hose tossed the final inning and two-thirds and earned his first Carolina League save by finishing the contest.

Brentz, Spring, and Peley all had two hits to lead the way for the Red Sox, while eight of the nine Pelicans had a hit, but none of them registered a multi-hit night.

Ranaudo allowed two runs on four hits in his five-inning performance, earning his ninth victory of the season between Greenville and Salem. He tossed 48 of his 81 pitches for strikes and K'd four, while walking two, in his 26th and last appearance of the season.

The Red Sox and Pelicans will square off one more time on Monday evening at BB&T Coastal Field to wrap up the regular season. Salem will start Stolmy Pimentel, while Myrtle Beach will counter with Chad Bell. Though Salem has been eliminated from postseason contention, a victory on Monday would move the Sox past the Pelicans in the second-half Southern Division standings.
