Providence Bruins News Release
Utica, NY - The Providence Bruins defeated the Utica Comets Friday night 3-1 in the final meeting of the season between the clubs. The P-Bruins got goals from Connor Clifton, Austin Czarnik and Anton Blidh while Jordan Binnington made his 11th start of the season in net.
Clifton helped Providence jump out to an early lead in what turned out to be a fast-moving first period. At 4:53, Zach Senyshyn used his speed to enter the offensive zone and after getting to the net sent a centering pass to Kenny Agostino. His one-timer was stopped, but he got the rebound to Senyshyn who found Clifton at the blue line. His shot from the point hit off the post and in for his second goal of the season as the P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
It took until there were 9.2 seconds remaining in the second, but Providence extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to their top line. Agostino fought for the puck in the corner and found Jordan Szwarz in left slot. He fed Czarnik with a beautiful centering feed through the crease and Czarnik's one-timer hit the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season. Utica goaltender Richard Bachman argued that net was dislodged, but after review the play stood and Providence brought a 2-0 lead to the locker room.
As they had throughout most of the game, the P-Bruins controlled the pace of the game and sat comfortably on their two-goal lead. Utica decided to pull their goalie with 4:30 to play, and the unusual decision earned them a goal from Zack MacEwen with 1:09 left in the game. However, an empty net goal from Blidh with six seconds left sealed the victory as Providence swept the four-game season series with a 3-1 win.
Binnington stopped 21 of 22 shots while Bachman stopped 26 of 28. Providence was 0-2 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their season-long eight-game road trip tomorrow night in Belleville when they take on the Senators at 7pm.
