Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins defeated the St. John's IceCaps this afternoon 3-0 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Bobby Robins, Carter Camper and Lane MacDermid had the goals while Niklas Svedberg turned aside 18 shots for his first professional shutout.
The Bruins wasted no time getting on the board as Robins opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game. Robins came through the middle and buried a pass from Christian Hanson for his first goal of the season to give Providence an early lead. That goal set the tone of the period as Providence dominated the period, spending most of the period in the offensive zone tallying 14 shots to the IceCaps' five. The Bruins had their defense tested when Chris Bourque took a high-sticking penalty but they managed to kill it off before St. John's could even the score. Despite the effort, would not score again to end the period leading 1-0.
Providence had plenty of power play opportunities in the middle frame as St. John's started to get into some penalty trouble. With less than ten minutes to go in the period, the Bruins had their first 5-on-3 chance with Paul Postma and Spencer Machacek in the box but were unable to hit the back of the net. Providence had another 5-on-3 opportunity with Machacek still in the box and Dean Arsene joining him. Nine seconds into the two man advantage, Ryan Spooner fed the puck to Carter Camper who beat Eddie Pasquale blocker side to make it 2-0. Garnet Exelby almost extended the lead later in the period but his shot from the blue line rang the post.
The third period opened with the Bruins still killing off a penalty but the minute following the kill, Niklas Svedberg was put to the test. After making a glove save he spun around to reach up with his right hand to make another save to keep St. John's off the score sheet. MacDermid got Providence on the score sheet yet again when at 5:40 he dove in front of the net and scored lying down. Robins and Hanson both had the assists to give them a multi-point game. Providence killed off seven penalties and Svedberg stood tall the entire game stopping 18 shots for his first shutout of the season and the Bruins' first win at home of the season.
Svedberg earned the win, turning away 18 en route to his first professional shutout. Meanwhile, Pasquale fell short, blocking 35 of 38 Providence attempts. Providence went 1-for-5 on the power play and was flawless on the penalty kill.
