WORCESTER, MA - The Manchester Monarchs lost a goaltending duel against the Worcester Sharks, a 1-0 shootout loss, at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon, marking their second straight game without scoring a goal.
Manchester (5-2-0-1) leads the Atlantic Division with 11 points. Worcester (4-4-1-1) is tied with the St. John's IceCaps (5-6-0-0) for second place in the Atlantic Division with 10 points each.
"(Alex) Stalock was able to keep pucks in front of him until the shootout," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "He competed for every puck and his teammates cleared any attempt beyond the initial shot. The game was hard fought. (Martin) Jones was solid for us too but Worcester scored three in the shootout to our two. The Sharks clearly had us hemmed in during the third period. They outshot us and they were swarming for the final 20 minutes. There are plenty of positive things we are doing but those things tend to get overlooked when you come out on the short end of the stick. We still mustered a point but two is better."
Left wing John McCarthy and centers Jon Matsumoto and James Sheppard scored in the shootout victory for the Sharks. Monarchs left wing Marc-Andre Cliche and center Robbie Czarnik scored in the shootout. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones denied Sharks center Travis Oleksuk in the shootout. Sharks netminder Alex Stalock denied left wing Nikolay Prokhorkin, center Linden Vey and right wing Tyler Toffoli in the shootout.
Jones (5-2-1) took his first shootout loss of the season and earned his second shutout of the season making saves on all 38 shots he faced and stopping 1-of-4 shootout attempts. Stalock (4-2-0) earned his first shutout of the season and fourth victory of the season making 27 saves on 27 shots and stopping 3-of-5 shootout snipers.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Worcester was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.
Notables: Monarchs left wing David Meckler and defenseman Mike Matczak made their season debuts...The Monarchs have not scored a goal in 138 minutes and 34 seconds, their longest stretch this season...The Monarchs penalty kill was 7-for-7 improving their season success rate to 85.0% (34-of-40).
