Providence, RI â Providence Bruins netminder Tim Thomas made 20 saves in a 3-0 shutout win over the Springfield Falcons before 8,132 at the Dunkin' Donut Center on Friday evening. Defensemen Rich Brennan, Martin Wilde, and Milan Jurcina provided the scoring for the P-Bruins. Jean-Marc Pelletier stopped 36 of 39 shots for Springfield.
Brennan scored during his team's first power play to open scoring 7:37 into the game. Forwards Brad Boyes and Darren VanOene assisted on the tally.
Wilde, who attended training camp this season with the Falcons, doubled the P-Bruins lead with his first goal of the season with a shot from the left point at 6:15 of the second period.
Later in the frame, the Falcons killed off a Providence two-man advantage that lasted 1:16.
However, the P-Bruins connected for a power-play goal with 4:44 remaining in the period to make the score 3-0. Jurcina held a clearing attempt in the Springfield zone along the right boards before notching his fifth goal of the campaign with a blast from the point.
Providence outshot the Falcons, 12-1, during the second period.
Each goaltender made six saves in a scoreless third period.
Assistant coaches Gary Shuchuk and Gord Dineen guided the Falcons from the bench while head coach Marty McSorley viewed the game along with Phoenix Coyotes assistant general manager Laurence Gilman in the press box.
Brennan and Jurcina each finished with a goal and an assist for the Bruins in the game.
For Thomas, the game marked the netminder's eighth shutout of the season and ninth for his P-Bruins' career. Both marks are franchise records.
The Falcons completed the season series with a record of 2-7-1-0 against Providence.
The Falcons will host the Manchester Monarchs at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday evening in the 2003-04 season home finale. Game time is 7:35 p.m. Fans will have the chance to win the shirts off the team's backs as the Falcons' Banknorth warm-up jerseys will be given away through a raffle to benefit Springfield Falcons Charities.
