P-Bruins Allow Season-High in Goals & Fall 8-2 in Charlotte

Charlotte, NC - The Providence Bruins fell to the Charlotte Checkers Saturday night 8-2 in the first meeting between the franchises since 2011. The P-Bruins got goals from Ryan Fitzgerald and Kenny Agostino while Zane McIntyre made his tenth start of the season in net.

After a scoreless first, Providence opened up the scoring 3:48 into the second period. Shortly after the conclusion of a power play, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson fired a shot on Checkers goalie Alex Nedeljkovic. The shot never got through, but the loose puck found Zach Senyshyn at the left dot. He fired one that Fitzgerald got a piece of in front, deflecting it by Nedeljkovic for his fifth goal of the season and giving the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead.

The rest of the period was all Checkers as their offense exploded for three unanswered goals in the period. The first came at 9:54 of the period, as after flying up the boards on the left side Aleksi Saarela drove in and backhanded one over McIntyre's glove hand to tie the score 1-1. At 13:52, a power play gave the Checkers a 2-1 lead off a great play from Andrew Poturalski and Patrick Brown. A beautiful centering feed found Brown at the left doorstep and all he needed to do was tap the puck into the open net for the goal. The final goal of the period came from Julien Gauthier all alone in front after a backhanded centering feed from Sergey Tolchinsky as the Checkers held a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Charlotte rode that momentum into the third, opening up the score and taking a commanding lead. Providence allowed a season-worst five goals in the period and gave up a season-high eight for the game. Andrew Miller, Warren Foegele, Nick Schilkey, Philip Samuelsson and Tolchinsky all scored for the Checkers in a 12 minute stretch. A late power play goal from Agostino cut into the deficit slightly but the Checkers walked away with a commanding 8-2 victory.

McIntyre stopped 35 of 43 shots while Nedeljkovic stopped 15 of 17. Providence was 1-4 on the power play and 5-8 on the penalty kill. These two teams are back in action tomorrow when they meet again in Charlotte at 1pm.
