Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
It may be a new half of the Pioneer League season, but the Idaho Falls Chukars and Orem Owlz picked up right where they left off in the first half with the Owlz roughing up the Chukars to the tune of 9-5 at Brent Brown Ballpark.
After going 1-7 against the Owlz in the first half of the season the Chukars were hoping to exercise their demons on Wednesday. Things looked promising at the start of the game as Idaho Falls jumped out to a 3-0, 1st inning lead thanks to RBIs from Luis Piterson, Daniel Mateo, and Edul Escobar.
The lead would be short lived, however. Orem, which entered the series with a .340 team batting average versus Idaho Falls, plated four runs in the bottom of the first to quickly regain the lead, followed by two runs in the fourth and seventh and a single run in the eighth. For the game the Owlz knocked around 11 base hits and picked up six walks.
The Chukars did manage a brief rally in the sixth, scoring two runs on a bases loaded walk to Runey Davis and an RBI single by Justin Fradejas to make the score 6-5, but the Owlz answered with their two seventh inning tallies to quickly squash the comeback.
Starting pitcher Willian Avinazar (0-1) took the brunt of the damage for the Chukars, as he allowed six runs on four hits and five walks over his 4.1 innings. Orem reliever Shane Waller (4-0) exited with the win after tossing two shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Danny Reynolds earned his fifth save of the year for his two, shutout innings to end the game.
Trevor Hairgrove, who went 3-4 with a double and three RBI, led the Orem offensive attack while Mark Threlkeld was the only Chukar with a multi-hit game, going 2-4.
With the loss the Chukars have now dropped three games in a row to fall to 1-3 while the Owlz improve to 3-1. The two teams will wrap up their brief, 2-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
