Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
The Owlz won their fourth game in a row, knocking off the Casper Ghosts 8-4 on Friday night at Mike Lansing Field. The Owlz win pushed them into a first-place tie with the Ogden Raptors going into the final game of the first half.
Junior Carlin (3-0) and Danny Reynolds combined to pitch 4.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen to allow the Owlz (22-15) hitters to knock around the Ghosts (10-27) pitching.
Frazier Hall and Ryan Jones both hit 2-run home runs in the Owlz victory. The Owlz fell behind for the 8th straight game, going down 1-0 after one inning on a RBI double by Sam Mende. Yafistel Roja doubled to lead off the 1st and 3rd innings and came in to score both times with two outs in the inning- once on Mende's double and then in the 3rd on Mende's 7th home run of the year.
The Owlz went ahead 3-1 in the 3rd on Hall's home run and then on a two-base error by Juan Ciriaco. The Ghosts committed five errors, which led to two unearned runs.
Casper took a 4-3 lead in the 4th when Francisco Sosa hit a RBI groundout off Aaron Meade. Meade took over in the 4th for Joe Melioris and lasted 0.2 innings, giving up one run. Melioris allowed four runs in 3.2 innings, but Carlin and Reynolds picked up both pitchers.
Carlin went 2.1 hitless innings, allowing one walk. Reynolds recorded his fourth save, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out four.
The bullpen's great performance allowed Orem to get two runs in the 5th, one in the 6th and two in the 9th.
Raul Fernandez got two outs in the 5th before walking Kaleb Cowart. Manager Tony Diaz went to his lefthander, Brook Hart (1-1) to face the left-handed batter Jones. Jones, who hits lefties extremely well, launched the second pitch he saw over the right-centerfield wall for a home run.
C.J. Cron scored in the 6th on an error and the Owlz got two more runs on a Taylor Lindsey RBI triple in the 9th and a RBI single by Jerod Yakubik.
The Owlz will take on the Ghosts in the final game of the first half of the season on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
Note: Taylor Lindsey extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a double in the 4th, while Trevor Hairgrove extended his on-base streak to 16 games with a walk in the 4th.
