Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

The Idaho Falls Chukars wrapped up the 1st half of the Pioneer League season in fine fashion Saturday night, as the Chukars stormed past the first place Ogden Raptors 7-2 in front of 2,009 fans at Melaleuca Field.

In a nice example of how the Chukars have improved since the start of the season, both the pitching and hitting were in fine form at the season's midway point. Chukars starting pitcher Aaron Brooks (3-1) earned the win by holding the potent Ogden offense to just two runs on eight hits over his six innings pitched, while David Middendorf and Edwin Carl combined for three shutout innings as well.

At the dish the Chukars offense got to a highly touted Raptors pitcher for the second straight night. Idaho Falls knocked around Brandon Martinez (5-3) to the tune of five runs on seven hits in just four innings pitched. The Chukars would also get reliever Yimi Garcia for two runs, as the club scored six of their seven runs with two outs.

The scoring started in the first when right fielder Chris Elder doubled to right and was driven in one out later on an RBI single from third baseman Mark Threlkeld. Idaho Falls would then explode for four runs in the second to go up 5-0. Center fielder Tyler Chism, Elder and first baseman Dean Espy would all drive in runs, with Elder's 2-RBI triple being the big blast.

Ogden would score single runs in both the third and fourth frames to make the score 5-2, but Henry Moreno would make all that up with a monstrous 2-run home run off the left field scoreboard in the fifth to finish the scoring at 7-2.

With the win the Chukars finish the first half of the season with a 17-21 record, five games behind the division winning Raptors (22-16) who clinched a playoff spot despite losing thanks to Orem losing in Casper.

The second half of the season kicks of Sunday afternoon, with the Chukars and Raptors scheduled to wrap up their three game series at 4:00 p.m.
