Northern Colorado Owlz News Release

The Orem Owlz made a great comeback, but fell short as the Casper Ghosts won 8-4 on Saturday night at Mike Lansing Field. The loss by the Owlz gives the Ogden Raptors the first half title.

The Owlz stayed close the entire ballgame, trailing 2-1 until the 7th inning, but Casper (11-27) scored six runs in the 7th to blow the game open and give themselves a lead that was just too big for Orem (22-16) to overcome.

The Owlz allowed the opponent to score first for the ninth consecutive game when David Kandilas and Trevor Story hit back-to-back RBI doubles off of Daniel Vargas-Vila. Vargas-Vila (1-2) was solid, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out seven.

Ryan Jones hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning that cut the deficit in half. Patrick Johnson started for the Ghosts and gave up just one unearned run in four innings of work.

The score stayed at 2-1 until the 7th inning, when the Owlz bullpen ran into trouble. Shane Waller came on for his third inning of work and allowed three of the first four batters he faced to reach base. Eddie Sipple relieved him with one out and the score 3-1, and got Rossell Herrera to ground out. Sam Mende was intentionally walked, Will Swanner was walked, which brought in a run, and Harold Riggins hit a bases-clearing double. By the time the inning was over, the Owlz were trailing 8-1.

The Owlz showed some fight, scoring three unearned runs in the 8th off of Ben Hughes. Hughes (1-1) threw four innings in relief of Johnson, and allowed six hits and one walk.

In the end, the deficit was just too big for the Owlz to come back from. Ryan Jones flew out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Orem ends the first half with a 22-16 record, and loses the tiebreaker to Ogden. The standings will now re-set, as the first game of the second half will take place tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. in Casper.
