Northern Colorado Owlz News Release

The Orem Owlz committed three errors in the first two innings of Thursday's Pioneer League opener, and could not recover at Melaleuca Field as they fell to the Idaho Falls Chukars 4-0. In Bill Richardson's first game as manager, the Owlz recorded four errors and three hits.

The Chukars (1-0, 1-0 PIO South) opened the scoring in the first inning, aided by two defensive errors from the Owlz (0-1, 0-1 PIO South). Hunter Dozier, the 8th overall pick in the 2013 first year player draft, hit a ground ball off the glove of Owlz second baseman Kody Eaves to score Humberto Arteaga. Three batters later, Alexis Rivera grounded out and brought in Dozier to give Idaho Falls a 2-0 lead.

Daniel Rockett's second-inning double was the only extra-base hit of the game, and it scored Arteaga to give the Chukars a 3-0 lead. Arteaga finished the night with two runs scored and two walks. Idaho Falls added the only run of the final seven frames in the 6th, when Carlos Garcia singled home Beau Maggi with one out.

Patrick Conroy pitched 5.1 strong innings for Idaho Falls, as he gave up three hits and no runs while striking out seven. Eight of the nine in play outs against Conroy were hit on the ground. Bounce outs were also an overall trend of the game, as 27 of the 29 in play outs were hit on the ground.

Owlz starter Victor Alcantara threw two innings and surrendered three runs (two earned) to go along with two walks and one strikeout. Chris O'Grady entered the game in the third and pitched exceptionally for the Owlz over three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Alan Busenitz, Grant Gordon and Spencer Trygg pitched one inning each.

Orem's best scoring chances came in the middle of the contest, as it had a runner in scoring position in the 3rd, 5th and 6th innings. Ryan Bolden, Chad Hinshaw and Zac Livingston recorded one hit each for the Owlz.

The Owlz return to action tomorrow night against the Chukars at Melaleuca Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. To listen live with Trevor Amicone, go to audio.oremowlz.com.
