Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
IDAHO FALLS, ID. -- One game, one shutout for the Idaho Falls pitching staff. The Chukars blank the Owlz 4-0 in the 2013 Pioneer League Opener. It's the second straight year the Chukars (Royals) defeat the Orem Owlz (Angels) in the opener at Melaleuca Field.
Left-handed pitcher Patrick Conroy (1-0) anchored the performance. The starting pitcher from California went 5.1 innings, striking out seven batters and only walking two. The hurler was replaced by righty Yender Caramo, who struck out three batters in 2.1 innings of work. The contest was completed by Josiel Martinez, who picked up his first save of the season without allowing a hit.
The offense was headlined by Hunter Dozier. The Royals first round selection (eighth overall) picked up a pair of hits in his first professional game. The starting third baseman drove in one run and also scored a run. Right fielder Elier Hernandez joined Dozier in the multi-hit club, also tallying two hits. Eight different Chukars batters tallied at least one hit. Owlz starter Victor Alcantara (0-1) lasted only two innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits.
The opening night crowd of 2,853 enjoyed a fireworks show after the game at Melaleuca Field. The opening night crowd is an increase from last season's opener.
Idaho Falls starting catcher Zane Evans left the game in the fifth inning with an apparent hand injury.
The Chukars and Owlz conclude the two game series tomorrow at Melaleuca Field, starting at 7:15. Ashton Goudeau is slated to get the ball for Idaho Falls. Orem is scheduled to counter with Arjenis Fernandez.
