Northern Colorado Owlz News Release

The Owlz cranked out 14 runs on 14 hits, but could not overcome six errors that resulted in nine unearned runs in a 16-14 loss to Idaho Falls in the season opener at Melaleuca Field.

The Owlz took an early 7-2 lead thanks to a solo home run by Wendell Soto in the 1st inning and a huge 2nd inning, in which the Owlz scored six runs on five hits and three walks. Andrew Ray, Soto and Jarrod Parks all had RBI singles in the frame.

The Owlz lead did not last long, as the Chukars put up six unanswered runs in the third through fifth innings to take an 8-7 lead. Orem answered back in the top of the 7th on Michael Bolaski's first home run of the season. But once again, the Chukars offense exploded, scoring six runs in the bottom of the 7th. Rainier Bello and Ethan Chapman both hit RBI triples to help the Chukars take a large lead that they thought would be enough to win.

However, in a seesaw affair, the Owlz came right back with six of their own in the top of the 8th. Anthony Bemboom hit a clutch 2-out 2-run double to tie the game. But the Chukars got the last say, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 8th on Adalberto Mondesi's bases loaded ground ball that became the Owlz sixth error of the game and put the Chukars up 16-14.

Fernando Cruz got the win, while Aaron Sookee was handed the loss. Kevin Allen picked up his first save of the season.

The Owlz and Chukars will be back at it on Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. at Melaleuca Field. You can listen to the game online at audio.oremowlz.com.
