BILLINGS, MONT - After pounding out 21 hits one night before, the Missoula Osprey were challenged to score runs on Tuesday night here at Dehler Park. Fortunately for the Osprey, so did the Billings Mustangs.
A pitcher's duel broke out in the second game of a four-game set between the two teams, with the Mustangs scoring a run in the bottom of the 10th to pull out a 2-1 win in front of 3,233 fans. Jon Matthews singled home the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning off of Osprey reliever Chris Capper (0-1) to end the contest.
The game was all about pitching, as both starters - Missoula right-hander Chris Pack and Billings right-hander Robert Stephenson - traded zeroes often, and collected plenty of strikeouts.
Pack went six innings in his first start for the Osprey, going perfect through the first four innings. Robert Maddox doubled for the first Mustangs hit and scored on a Carlos Sanchez RBI single that tied the game at 1-1. Pack, though, was stingy otherwise, allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters.
The Osprey were held to six hits, but put two together to lead off the game and, eventually, score their lone run. Pedro Ruiz led off the game with a single, followed by a single by Socrates Brito. Ruiz went to third on a wild pitch and, with two out, scored when Brito stole second and the throw sailed into center field.
Breland Almadova collected two hits, while Jake Lamb and Yosbel Gutierrez added hits for Missoula.
Dexter Price came on in relief of Pack, and wiggled out of a two-on, one-out situation unscathed. Price fanned three in two hitless innings of work.
The Osprey and Mustangs continue their four-game series on Wednesday at Dehler Park. The Osprey send left-hander Andrew Barbosa to the hill, while the Mustangs counter with righty Lucas O'Rear.
The Osprey will open the home schedule on June 22 against Great Falls. Tickets are available now at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 North Higgins in Downtown Missoula, online at MissoulaOsprey.com and by phone (406) 543-3300.
