Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Portland Beavers scored one run in the top of the 8th inning and pitched a combined shutout to beat the Sidewinders 1-0 in front of 5,454 fans on Saturday night. RHP Micah Owings, on a Major League rehab assignment, pitched five shutout innings but received a no-decision after leaving with the game tied 0-0. Owings gave up four hits and struck out seven while walking one. He threw 90 pitches, 56 for strikes. He was also 1-for-2 with a line drive single to right and a strikeout.
RHP Jailen Peguero relieved Owings in the 6th inning, and held the Beavers scoreless in two innings of work. He gave up two walks and struck out two.
RHP Mike Schultz relieved Peguero in the 8th inning, and gave up a leadoff double to CF Adam Shabala. After walking PH Brian Myrow, Schultz got 2B Brett Dowdy to pop up a bunt to third base, and SS Craig Stansberry flew out to centerfield.
LHP Randy Choate replaced Schultz with two outs to face the left-handed 1B Paul McAnulty. With a 1-0 count, McAnulty hit a slow ground ball up the middle. Sidewinders 2B Brian Barden dove and got a glove on it, but he was unable to complete the play as the ball trickled away toward the outfield. Shabala scored from second on the single, putting the Beavers ahead 1-0.
The Sidewinders threatened in the bottom of the ninth after loading the bases with one out, but were unable to score after PH Matt Erickson struck out, and CF Jeff Salazar flew out to rightfield to end the game. The Sidewinders had just four hits on the night, two of them coming from LF Dee Brown, who was 2-4 on the night.
The Sidewinders will face the Beavers on Sunday in the final game of this four game series. First pitch is at 1:30 PM. RHP Enrique Gonzalez (0-2, 4.64) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Jared Wells (0-3, 6.98) will start for the Beavers. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 1:15 p.m.
