Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - Less than 24 hours after losing one of its premier players, the Round Rock Express picked up one of the swiftest outfielders in all of professional baseball.
Hunter Pence, batting .341 for Round Rock, was called up by the Houston Astros after the Express' 8-7 loss to Albuquerque on Friday. His replacement, Tim Raines, Jr., was added to the Express line-up Saturday morning.
Raines, who will wear No. 11 for Round Rock, was batting .244 with 15 runs and four stolen bases for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks before his promotion. The 27-year-old swiped his 400th base Friday, and his 390th in the minor leagues, moving him to second all-time among minor leaguers.
His addition marks the seventh transaction for Round Rock and leaves the Express' roster minus one player at 23.
A sixth round pick by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1998 draft, Raines first appeared in seven games with the Orioles during the 2000 season. He made 68 more appearances with Baltimore, compiling a .213 batting average with nine doubles and 10 stolen bases.
A lifetime .263 hitter over 10 minor league seasons, Raines is the son of longtime Major Leaguer Tim Raines, the 1981 National League Rookie of the Year and lifetime .294 hitter over 23 Major League seasons.
Pence, the 2006 Texas League and Futures All-Star, belted 10 doubles, 19 RBI and three home runs for the Express before his Friday call-up. A second-round selection by the Astros in 2004, Pence batted .283 with 28 home runs and 95 RBI with Corpus Christi in 2006.
The Houston Astros also announced that left-handed reliever Stephen Randolph had been designated for assignment. Randolph, 32, appeared for the Astros in two games, striking out two, walking one and allowing one earned run in two relief appearances. In five games for Round Rock this year, he is 2-0 with an 0.84 ERA with one walk and 18 strikeouts.
