Over $31,000 Raised for Cancer

Brandon, MB. - The Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba), in association with the Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that over $31,000 was raised during the Western Hockey League club's annual "Pink the Rink" promotion last Friday.

The book on this year's fundraising initiative was officially closed Wednesday afternoon as the final Raffle draw for Jaeger White's number 22 pink jersey was awarded.

The sale of raffle tickets, special edition pink t-shirts and of course the auction of 24 Wheat Kings' jerseys generated a total of $31,490, surpassing last year's total of just under $30,000.

Since the first "Pink the Rink" Night was held in 2014, over $85,000 has been raised by western Manitoba hockey fans for the Canadian Cancer Society.

In addition to our fans, special thanks go out to netminder Jordan Papirny, Bruce Luebke of 880 CKLQ and 94.7 Star FM.

While Papirny donated three sticks, used during Friday's 8-3 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings, Bruce Luebke auctioned off Jordan Thomson's number 34 jersey during a recent play by play broadcast from Regina and the Star FM Morning Mess auctioned off Tyler Coulter's number 21 jersey last Wednesday.

This year's jerseys featured names of loved ones that have passed away due to this terrible disease.

Names included former Wheat King coach Dunc McCallum, Onanole's Darren Gusdal, who was a member of the 1979 WHL Championship team, Garrett Armour's grandmother Joyce and former Brandon athletic trainer Rob Stouffer.

"Pink the Rink is an incredible example of how a community can get involved and support cancer patients in the right of their lives," says Mark MacDonald, Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings 5-game in seven night road trip continues tonight in Cranbrook, B.C. against the Kootenay Ice. Tonight is game three of the weeklong excursion and the Wheat Kings will be hoping to get back on track after losing Sunday night in Prince Albert and dropping a heartbreaking overtime decision to the Blades in Saskatoon on Monday afternoon.

Brandon's next home game is one week from tonight - Rain Check Night - when the Blades return to Westman Place.

Tickets to the game, which is a presentation of the Brandon University Bobcats and this year's CIS National Womens Volleyball Championship, are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.

Any unused tickets (since December 27th 2015) can be exchanged at the box office for a "free" ticket to this game (regular box office agency fees apply).
