Outlaws Win In Walk-Off Fashion 5-4 Over Roadrunners; Jova RBI Single Wins It

July 2, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

The Chico Outlaws downed the St George Roadrunners in walk-off fashion 5-4 on Thursday night in a game that was delayed at the start by an hour and fifteen minutes due to a scheduling snafu with the umpires.

Mikael Jova's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Bobby Hill sealed the win for Chico, who now sit at 27-9 overall and in first place in the GBL North. Demetrius Banks, the starter for the Outlaws, got a no-decision, but pitched a beauty, going seven scoreless innings and allowing just four hits and striking out a season-high eight batters.

Both starting pitchers threw four scoreless innings before the Roadrunners' Matt Rossignol blinked in the bottom of the fifth. Left fielder JJ Sherrill hit a two-out double, then scored on a bloop RBI single to right field by Jova to give the Outlaws a 1-0 lead. Catcher Mike Rose then came up and blasted a two-run shot to right-center field, his second homerun in as many days, to make it 3-0 Outlaws at the end of five.

The score stayed that way until the top of the eighth inning when St George touched up Outlaws reliever David Dinelli. Pinch hitter Caisey Raisbeck singled to start the inning and advanced to second on center fielder Vic Buttlers single. One batter later, Yosvany Almario singled to load the bases. Cleanup hitter Jermy Acey was at the plate when Raisbeck scored on a passed ball, advancing Buttler to third and Almario to second. After an intentional walk to Acey, Outlaws closer Matt Perisho came out of the Outlaws bullpen to face Carlos Sosa, who hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Acey at second base, but Buttler scored after a throwing error to home plate by first baseman John Urick to cut the lead to 3-2 Chico. Nick Fitzgerald then hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Almario, tying the game at three apeice.

In the top of the ninth, St George scored the go-ahead run when pinch-runner Jon Dutton scored on a throwing error by Bobby Hill after a fielder's choice hit by Henry Calderon, giving the Roadrunners a 4-3 lead.

With the Outlaws trailing by two runs, Rich Janeway came off the bench for the Outlaws to pinch-hit for pitcher Matt Perisho (2-0) to lead off the bottom of the ninth, singling off reliever Mitch Arnold (0-1). Mitch Einertson sacrificed Janeway to single on a bunt, bringing up Hill. The Outlaws second baseman's single drove in Janeway to tie the game at 4-4. After an intentional walk to Sherrill, the GBL's leading homerun hitter, Arnold threw a fastball to Jova, who laced it down the left field line to cash in Hill for the winning run and the final score of a 5-4 game.

St George falls to 13-23 overall with the loss.
