Outlaws Home Magic Nets Walk-Off Win

July 2, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

From the jaws of defeat, the Chico Outlaws stung the St. George RoadRunners for two tallies in the ninth to come from behind for a 5-4 win on Thursday night's series opener at Nettleton Stadium.

Maikal Jova plated two crucial runs - the first Outlaw tally in the fifth and the game-winner in the ninth with a single scoring Bobby Hill.

Chico (27-9) increased their lead in the GBL's Northern Division to 6.5 games over both the Calgary Vipers and the Edmonton Capitals. St. George let a pristine opportunity to play spoiler slip through their fingers dropping to 13-23 on the year.

For the first four innings, the game was a pitcher's duel between Demetrius Banks and Matt Rossignol. The St. George starter battled through a bit more adversity but was able work through the situations including leaving five on base through the first two frames.

Chico used two-out magic in the fifth to take the lead. J.J. Sherrill doubled to left-center to spark the rally. Jova looped a single to right giving the Outlaws a 1-0 lead. Rossignol then fell behind Mike Rose and offered a fastball that carried over the fence in right for a two-run homer.

Banks stymied St. George for a second consecutive appearance - blanking the RoadRunners on four hits with seven strikeouts. Combined this season, Banks has tossed 13 scoreless frames versus the burnt orange.

The RoadRunner bats came alive in the seventh against the Outlaw bullpen. Pinch hitter Casey Raisbeck, Vic Buttler and Yosvany Almario all singled to load the bags. A wild pitch from David Dinelli scored Raisbeck pushing the Outlaws to walk Jermy Acey intentionally. Matt Perisho entered from the bullpen to face Carlos Sosa. The lefty grounded a ball to first baseman John Urick who threw a ball that bounced low for an error plating Buttler. The equalizing run scored by Almario came on a slow roller to short off the bat of Nick Fitzgerald.

St. George took the lead in the ninth when pinch runner Jon Dutton scored from second on a throwing error from second base on a potential inning-ending double play.

Mitch Arnold took the ball for the ninth. Rich Janeway singled into the shortstop hole and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bobby Hill rolled a hit just past second to tie the game at 4-4. After a wild pitch and an intentianl walk, Jova delivered a single to left pushing Hill across home just in front of the cut-off throw.

Perisho went from being on the hook to earning the win (2-0). Arnold took his first season loss (0-1) blowing the save in the ninth.

Game two of the four-game set is Saturday night at 8:05pm Mountain. RHP Reed Dickert takes the hill for St. George against the "Knuckleball Princess" from Japan, Eri Yoshida. Live coverage of the RoadRunners first crack at Yoshida begins at 7:45pm with John Potter on the Infowest Pre-Game Show.
