Toros Sweep Scorpians With 20-2 Blowout

July 2, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Tucson Toros News Release

The Tucson Toros swept the Yuma Scorpions Thursday night as they batted around in the 3rd to score 10 runs to help fuel 20-2 victory.

For the second night in a row, the Toros jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the 1st. RF Francisco Plasencia's 2 RBI double and SS Ryan Priddy's RBI triple were the big hits in the inning.

Tucson exploded offensively in the 3rd inning when they batted around en route to 10 runs. RHP Albie Lopez and LF Lino Garcia had 2 RBI singles, while Plasencia knocked in 3 with a double to center. Plasencia's 2-hit game increased his hitting streak to 11 straight games.

The Toros followed up that inning with a grand slam in the 4th off the bat of 3B Wally Backman Jr., his 3rd homer of the year, that sailed over the centerfield wall to give the Toros an 18-2 lead. The bomb was Backman Jr.'s 2nd grand slam of the season and was the first grand slam for the Toros at home this season.

The Toros capped the scoring with 2 more runs in the 5th to make it 20-2. The 20 runs were the most scored for the Toros in franchise history. The previous mark was 16 which was set on June 10th of last year against the Chico Outlaws.

Backman Jr., and Plasencia combined for half the Toros offensive production as they both drove in 5 RBI's each, both tying for the mark of the most RBI's for a Toro in a single game this season.

1B Cristobal Santana extended his hitting streak to 18 straight with singles in the 1st and 3rd innings. Santana now holds the longest hitting streak for any Toro on the season and surpassed Backman Jr.'s previous mark of 17 straight. He is now only 2 games back from the longest hitting streak in the GBL this season which stands at 20 straight games.

The Toros will go on the road to play Yuma for the next two days and be back at Hi Corbett on Sunday, July 4th to celebrate Independence Day with a special Star Spangled Spectacular fireworks show. The game will begin a 5-game homestand against Yuma and Chico.
