Edmonton Capitals News Release
There could not have been a better script for the Edmonton Capitals to follow on their first Canada Day game in franchise history. The weather was perfect, the stands were full with a sea of red and white and the Edmonton Capitals provided some extra innings fireworks to complete a comeback victory 2 - 1 over the visiting Calgary Vipers. Then one of the largest crowds in franchise history stayed for a spectacular City fireworks show sending the fans home happy and full of patriotic pride. All the Caps offense was courtesy of the long ball. Alex Prieto hit a 3-2 pitch with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning over the wall in left field to tie the game at one. Right fielder Tom Collaro sent a ball to deep left-centre field in the bottom of the tenth inning to seal the Caps fourth win in a row.
Lou Pote had another strong outing for the Capitals pitching six and two-third innings giving up six hits, no earned runs, and had six strikeouts. It is the kind of start that the Caps coaching staff has come to expect from the former Major Leaguer and he kept Edmonton in the game until the bats finally came alive.
"We got another quality start from Lou tonight. You got a sense early on that it was going to be a well-pitched game as opposed to the last couple, which is great," stated Caps pitching coach Mark Randall pointing out that there were 45 combined runs scored the previous two games these teams played. "I like the type of game we had tonight. It's always nice to come out on the winning end like that."
The week- long series continues between these two clubs with a Safeway Fireworks Friday on deck. Fans will be treated to another spectacular fireworks show as they always do for Friday night Capital home game. Edmonton and Calgary are now tied for second in the North Division standings, both looking to gain ground on division leader Chico. The series will shift back to Calgary for a pair of games Saturday and Sunday.
The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capital season seats start at under $9 per game and are still available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
