Outlaws Smoke Hogs In 7-1 Victory

February 19, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kansas City Outlaws News Release

One day after losing a heartbreaker to the Western Division leading Rockford IceHogs, the Kansas City Outlaws stormed back, getting revenge in brutal style. A third period, five-goal explosion by Kansas City stunned the Hogs and earned a standing ovation from the Kemper Arena faithful, as the Outlaws skated to a 7-1 home victory.

With super sub Tim Knudsen in goal, the Outlaws took charge in the first period. Despite being outshot 20-9 in the initial frame, Kansas City held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Briane Thompson scored the lone goal at 7:32 with assists by Vaclav Zavoral and Mark Lee. Most of the first period excitement came from pushing and shoving between the two teams.

The IceHogs tied things at 1-1 on Vince Malts' tally at 8:36 of the second period. That goal- the 10th of the year for the Rockford defenseman- was assited by Olivier Proulx and Jean-Francois Dufour.

From that point on, it was all Outlaws. Kansas City Captain Jason Ruff notched his first of two goals with 3:03 remaining before the second intermission. Ruffer was assisted by Jay Murphy and Thompson. After two periods, the Outlaws were in command 2-1.

It would be hard to blame Rockford goaltender Michel Robinson if he's feeling shell-shocked after the third period. It seemed every time somebody blinked the Outlaws scored again.

Smokin' Joe Seroski picked up a pair of third period goals, the first coming at 0:55. Seroski was asssisted by Jay Murphy and Thomspon, who had three points on the day. Seroski beat Robinson again at the 3 minute mark, assisted this time by Ruff and Scott Kirton.

With the score 4-1 late in the game, you would usually expect both teams to go through the motions the last few minutes. Not today. Jimmy Callahan added to the slaughter with his 10th of the year at 14:41 (Zavoral, Murray).

Jason Ruff's second goal, and 16th of the year, came at 17:54 (Seroski), and a final goal by Dan Rohanna (Murray) sealed the deal with 1:13 remaining. Final score- Outlaws 7, IceHogs 1.
