Chico Outlaws News Release

LONG BEACH, CA - For the second straight night, the Chico Outlaws were unable to push any runs across the plate...while the Long Beach Armada scored in each of the first three innings and went on to win their eighth straight game, beating the Outlaws 5-0 Tuesday night at Blair Field in Long Beach.

For just the second time in club history, the Outlaws suffered back-to-back shutouts, though like Monday's series-opening 5-0 loss, Chico let several scoring opportunities slip away. In six of the nine innings, the Outlaws got the leadoff man aboard...but had only one runner reach third base the entire evening. Long Beach, meanwhile, got on the board right away, scoring a run in the 1st inning when Johnny Kaplan doubled, stole third and came home when catcher Jason Alcott's attempt to throw him out sailed into left field.

The Armada went up 2-0 in the 2nd when Cole Cicatelli doubled home Kirk Gross...then in the 3rd Chris Wakeland knocked in Chris Klemm with a double down the left field line, then scored on a Dan Trumble single, giving Long Beach a 4-0 lead. Armada starting pitcher Andrew Layfield kept Chico in check through the 5th inning, then in the 6th reliever Taylor George came in to defuse an Outlaws rally by striking out Jake Ferris with two runners aboard. Long Beach went up 5-0 in the 8th with a run off Chico reliever Jesse Oster - Kaplan delivering a bases loaded sacrifice fly to plate Gross. Newly-acquired left-hander Adam Nikolic retired the Outlaws in order in the 9th to lock down the victory...Chico dropping its ninth game in the last 12 tries.

Layfield (1-1) got credit for the win...Jake McLintock (2-2), making his first professional start, gave up four runs in four innings of work and was saddled with the loss. Jesse Kovacs had three of the Outlaws eight hits on the night, while four different Long Beach players - Kaplan, Wakeland, Trumble and Cicatelli - had two hits to pace the Armada's 10-hit attack. Tuesday's loss dropped Chico to 4-9 in the second half and 29-22 overall...the Armada stayed in sole possession of first place with the win, improving to 11-2 in the second half and 34-17 for the season. Game three of the series is set for Wednesday, with right-hander Tyler Pearson (4-4) on the mound for the Outlaws...Long Beach will counter with righty Dustin Gober (2-0). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
