Yuma Scorpions News Release

YUMA, Ariz. - Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Yuma Scorpions were on the verge of losing their second straight home game to the St. George RoadRunners.

That was until Pascual Matos hit his second big home run in less than a week, a three-run blast over the left-field wall at Desert Sun Stadium, lifting the Yuma Scorpions to a 4-2 win over the RoadRunners on Tuesday night.

Trailing 2-0 at the time, Matos' blast put Yuma ahead 3-2 before closer Neil Hayes shut the door on the visitors from St. George. It came on the first pitch in the at-bat from starter Danny Hall, scoring Yosvany Almario and Maikel Jova.

Matos also hit a lead-off home run last Saturday night in Chico in the top of the 10th inning, giving the Scorpions the momentum they needed to be the Outlaws 6-3.

Scorpions starter Evan White improved to 5-2 with the victory, striking out six over seven innings, giving up seven hits.

Hayes got his seventh save of the season, retiring all six RoadRunners batters he faced, including three strikeouts.

Almario led Yuma offensively with a 4-for-4 night, including two doubles and a run scored. Jova was for 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Hall (0-2) was in line for his first victory as a member of the RoadRunners before the pitch that Matos sent over the fence.

Brett Flowers led St. George with two hits and Juan Melo provided the team's runs on a two-home run in the second inning.

With the win, the Scorpions (10-3, 31-20) kept pace with Long Beach (11-2, 34-17) who defeated the Chico Outlaws 5-0 for a second straight night.

The two teams renew acquaintances at 7:05 p.m. as Charles Merricks (5-1) takes the ball for Yuma and Robert Salini (0-0) for St. George.
