Orange County Flyers News Release

Solid pitching and a big 2-run home run carried the Flyers to a 3-2 series opening victory over the Reno Silver Sox...

Orange County Flyer pitchers Nate Holguin, Ezequiel Ruvalcaba, and Nick Casanova combined to thwart the Reno Silver Sox attack and 1B Peanut Williams hit a 2-run home run to lead the Flyers to a 3-2 win on Tuesday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.

The Silver Sox, playing their 1st game at Goodwin Field this season, got on the board quickly against Flyer starting pitcher Holguin (2-2). Silver Sox CF Victor Hall led-off the game with a walk and then scored on 1B Jose Rodriquez's 2-out RBI single to left to make it 1-0 Reno.

After Flyer RF Mark Okano lined out with 2-outs and the bases loaded to end the Flyer threat in the 1st inning, the Flyers tied the score at 1-1 in the 2nd when CF Garry Templeton II hit a RBI single on an inside-out swing to right off Silver Sox starter Nick Moran (2-3) to score 3B Brett Thomas, who led-off the inning with his 1st professional league hit in his 1st professional at-bat.

The Flyers grabbed the lead in the 5th inning when LF Rich Pohle hit a lead-off single to center and then P. Williams followed with his opposite-field 2-run bomb (his 6th home run of the season) to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.

Silver Sox LF Kane Simmons hit his league-leading 12th home run of the season on a solo shot to right with 2 outs in the 6th to close the Flyers lead to 3-2.

That is all the runs the Silver Sox would get as Flyers reliever Ruvalcaba (0-0) came in to replace Holguin (7 IP, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and 8 strikeouts) to pitch a shaky, but shutout 8th inning. Ruvalcaba walked Silver Sox LF Simmons to load the bases with 1 out, but responded by getting a strikeout and a fly out to left to end the inning and preserve the Flyers lead.

Flyer pitcher Casanova (2-0) pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning to solidify the Flyer victory and get his 3rd save of the season.

The Flyers got their 3rd victory in a row and improved to 7-6 in the 2nd half of the season and 26-25 overall in their 1st game home after a lengthy road trip. They continue with the 2nd game of a 3-game set against the Silver Sox tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Goodwin Field.
