Calderon & Dickert Named GBL Players of the Week
August 1, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release
(Dublin, CA. August 1, 2007) The Golden Baseball League announced 3B Henry Calderon of the Yuma Scorpions and RHP Reed Dickert of the Orange County Flyers have been named Player and Pitcher of Week Seven. Sponsored by Spalding Baseball, these weekly awards recognize the most outstanding position player and pitcher in the league each week.
Henry Calderon, 29, the Yuma Scorpion third baseman and hitting coach, was selected as Player of the Week. Calderon, an original Yuma Scorpion is in his 3rd season with the GBL and continues to sparkle in the field and at the plate. During the past week Calderon led the GBL in RBIs as he knocked in 12 baserunners as he hit .400 with 10 hits and a homerun. Originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals, he climbed as high as Double-A and spent two years there with the Wichita farm team. He initially played in Yuma in the Western League and he has hit over .300 for four different minor league teams in his career.
Reed Dickert, 23, the right-handed starting pitcher for the Orange County Flyers, has been selected as Pitcher of the Week. Dickert has been outstanding all season and one of the top starters in the GBL for 2007. However, last week he reached new heights as he set the single-game record for strikeouts in the GBL as he fanned 15 Chico Outlaw batters in just 8 innings while giving up a pair of hits in the shutout win. The second year Flyer, out of Oklahoma City University, was used primarily in releif in 2006 but moved into the starting rotation early this season and has blossomed into one of the league's dominating hurlers.
