Kansas City Outlaws News Release
Kansas City, MO â The Kansas City Outlaws improve their home record at Kemper Arena to 4-2 with a victory over the Quad City Mallards 6-4 on Friday night. The Outlaws increase their overall record to 8-13-1 and gain two points on the forth-place Mallards in the Western Division. The Outlaws are now within four points of Quad City in their pursuit to climb out of the division's cellar. The Outlaws look to continue their home success at Kemper Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Missouri River Otters.
Power play opportunities were the story of the first two periods, with a total of 12 penalties for 30 minutes handed out in the second period alone. After an early goal by Quad City's Terry Hollinger, Defenseman Matthieu Descoteaux fired in a power play goal to tie it up. The momentum swung toward the Outlaws at the end of the first after Derek Kern nailed in a goal to make it 2-1 at the end of one period.
The power plays came heavy in the second, as Descoteaux fired in his second power play goal that was sandwiched by two Mallards goals, all scored on the power play. With a tally of two goals by the Mallards and one by the Outlaws in the period, the score was 3-3 at the end of two.
The final period supplied the Outlaws faithful with the most excitement as the home team scored 31 seconds into the period on a goal by Steve Yetman and assisted by Descoteaux. After the Mallards answered to tie it up 6:10 into the period, Yetman became the game's hero with the game winning goal for the Outlaws with 3:40 remaining. Jimmy Callahan fired an amazing empty-netter that he scored on a shot that came from the boards past the blue line, all while Mallards defensemen were creating interference.
Yetman and Descoteaux were the obvious choice for two of the Stars of the Game, as each player tallied two goals and one assist.
The Outlaws are back at Kemper Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Missouri River Otters for their third of nine consecutive home games in the month of December. The two teams match up for the fifth time, as the home team in the series has won every game. Kansas City and Missouri are scheduled ten more times through the end of the season.
