Denver Outlaws News Release
Denver-May 19th, 2007-The Denver Outlaws defeated the visiting San Francisco Dragons 21-14 in a rematch of their 2006 Major League Lacrosse semifinal game. The Outlaws picked up where they left off against the Dragons last season, as they took the home opener before a crowd of 11,257 at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Outlaws midfielder Jeff Sonke came out firing, as he tallied 6 goals and a sock trick on the night.
After Dragons midfielder Tom Zummo scored an unassisted goal to open the scoring a minute into the game, Denver took control with five unanswered goals. The Outlaws took a 6-3 lead into the 2nd quarter.
The Outlaws outpaced the Dragons in both face-offs and ground balls and controlled the pace of play. Denver goaltender Trevor Tierney was solid in goal, recording 14 saves on 25 shots.
On a day when Outlaws midfielder Mike Law graduated from the University of Denver law school, he chipped in with a 2 goal effort and helped the hard-charging Outlaws offense. The game was intense with action, as the Outlaws Benson Erwin had to change jerseys due to blood on his first one.
Ryan Powell paced the Dragons offense, scoring 3 goals, one of which was a two point goal, and also managed 4 assists. The Dragons offense struggled to hit on all cylinders, but nonetheless managed to score 3 two pointers in the loss. With the win, the Outlaws improve to 1-0 on the season, while San Francisco falls to 0-1.
The Outlaws (1-0) hit the road for a game against the Chicago Machine (0-1) on Saturday, June 2nd, and return home to host the Los Angeles Riptide at 7:00 p.m. Mountain time on Saturday, June 9th.
