Barrage Defeat Cannons 13-9

Boston, MA (May 19, 2007) - On a cold, rainy night, in front of 8,275 fans at Harvard Stadium, the 2006 Major League Lacrosse Champions, the Philadelphia Barrage, defeated their long time rivals, the Boston Cannons, in their season opener for the first time in team history, with a score of 13-9. Matt Striebel was named the Bud Light MVP of the game with his four-point performance (4G).

The first quarter started off in the Cannons favor, with them scoring three goals in a row against the defending champions. Philadelphia had an answer for them, going on a three-goal run to tie the game with 7:01 left to play in the quarter. Barrage midfielder, Justin Smith, scored an incredible behind-the back goal while he was flying through the air with 42 seconds left to give the Barrage a one-goal lead. Both teams played great defense in the second quarter, with Cannons midfielder DJ Andrzejewski breaking the goal-less stint to tie the game at four with 3:31 left in the half. Philadelphia's Matt Striebel scored two back-to-back goals to give the Barrage a two-goal lead to end the first half. The score at the end of the half was Barrage 6, Cannons, 4. Barrage goaltender, Brian Dougherty, recorded nine saves, including a one-on-one with the Cannons Chazz Woodson. Newcomer Andy Corno, who is filling the shoes of the retired Paul Cantabene, went 7-6 in face offs for the Barrage. Philadelphia's leading scorer, Striebel, recorded his first hat trick of the 2007 season in the first half, scoring once in the first quarter and twice in the second quarter.

The Boston Cannons came out rested after halftime to put one by the 2006 Warrior Goalie of the Year, Dougherty, leaving them trailing by only one goal. Striebel scored his fourth goal of the night for the Barrage, keeping his team ahead by two, followed by a goal from attackman Jed Prossner, putting the Barrage up by three with 9:35 left in the third. Boston put a damper on Philly scoring run with a goal by Pat Myers. Philadelphia jumped to a three-goal lead with goals by Mike Springer and Roy Colsey. Attackman, John Christmas, who hails from the Philadelphia area, scored for the Cannons followed by a goal from Mike Powell. Ryan Boyle ended the scoring of the third quarter in the Barrage favor with a goal with only five seconds remaining; Philly came out strong in the fourth quarter with another goal from Boyle, followed by a goal from Springer. Cannons midfielder, Matt Poskay, scored bring their five-goal deficit down to four. Each teams defense played strong fourth quarters, limiting the scoring to only three goals. Dougherty came up huge saves in the final seconds of the game giving his team a big win.

Barrage points: Boyle with five points (2G, 3A), Striebel with four points (4G), Springer with three points (3G), Colsey with two points (1G, 1A), Smith with two points (2G) and Prossner with one point (1G).

Philadelphia takes the field again in their home opener in 2007 on Saturday, June 2 against the Rochester Rattlers. Face off is set for 7:00 p.m. at United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pa. Season tickets are still available by calling the Barrage ticket office at 610.355.8999.
