Boston Cannons News Release
Boston, MA (May 19, 2007) - They came despite the rain. Again. For the second straight season the Cannons home opener was a rain soaked affair and for the second straight season, it didn't matter to the fans. The outcome, however, was different. In front of 8,275 rain soaked fans the Cannons fell to the defending MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage 13-9.
"We're disappointed we couldn't get a win for this crowd," said Bill Daye, Cannons head coach. "Cannons fans are the best and the league and they showed it coming here in this miserable weather."
"Philly came ready to play," Daye continued. "They seemed to be all over every groundball. And when Brian Dougherty is playing that way in cage they are tough to beat."
Dougherty finished the game with 15 saves, several of the spectacular variety. Matt Striebel earned Bud Light MVP honors scoring four goals. The win moves the Barrage to 1-0 in 2007 while the Cannons fall to an even 1-1.
Things started promising for Boston in its Harvard Stadium debut. Drew Pfarr scored 55 seconds into the first quarter to start a 3-0 Cannons scoring run. Mike Powell notched his first career Cannons goal a minute and a half later. Chris Mucciolo finished the run with a goal from Matt Poskay feed.
After that, it was all Barrage. Philadelphia outscored the Cannons 13 to 6 the rest of the game. The Barrage rattled off four straight goals to take a 4-3 lead late in the first quarter.
Powell and DJ Andrzejewski led the way for Boston in the scoring column. Each scored twice. Poskay and John Christmas scored goals for the Cannons as well.
Powell's best play may have been on the defensive end. In a maneuver that will surely end up on highlight reels everywhere Powell actually made save diving into an open net and turning aside and open Barrage shot.
Jake Coon picked up his first loss of the season in net. He made 15 saves.
The Cannons cut the Barrage lead to 2 twice. Pat Myers scored to make it 8-6 with 6:10 left in the third quarter. Powell cut the lead to 10-8 with his second goal with 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Ryan Boyle then scored with 5 seconds left in the third to give the Barrage a 3 goal advantage. The Cannons would never get that close again.
Next up for Boston a road game in Long Island on May 25. The game will air live on ESPN 2 in HD at 7:00PM. You can also catch the radio broadcast on AM 890 ESPN Radio Boston.
