Chico Outlaws News Release
YUMA, AZ - Daniel Nava, Jason Van Meetren and David Pierson each drove in two runs and Derrick Loop tossed seven solid innings to become the Golden Baseball League's first eight-game winner as the Chico Outlaws halted a two game mini-losing streak Thursday, defeating the Yuma Scorpions 8-3 at Desert Sun Stadium.
Chico jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd when Nava doubled to lead off the inning, went to third on a Scott Dragicevich groundout and came home when Van Meetren bounced out to short. Yuma came back to tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd when Pascual Matos led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Pete Farina sacrifice fly. In the 3rd Nava would put the Outlaws ahead to stay when, with Craig Kuzmic on first, he launched a home run over the right field wall - Nava's 11th big fly of the year giving Chico a 3-1 lead. The Outlaws went up 4-1 in the 5th when Jason Matteucci blooped a double down the left field line and came home on Pierson's line single to center.
The Scorpions climbed back into the contest in the bottom of the 6th - Rich Janeway reached second when Matteucci misplayed a fly ball in center and scored two batters later on a sac fly by Maikel Jova. Yosvany Almario followed with a solo homer to left to cut the Outlaws lead to one; Matos then doubled to put the potential tying run in scoring position. Loop got A.J. Valentine to fly out to end the inning, and that would be as close as Yuma would get...in the 8th Chico effectively put the game away by scoring four times off Scorpions reliever Aaron Wilson - back-to-back leadoff doubles by Kuzmic and Jesse Kovacs made the score 5-3...Van Meetren delivered a bases loaded single to add another run...Nava would later score from third when Almario threw the ball away trying to start a double play...then Pierson capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Dragicevich and put the Outlaws up 8-3. Chico relievers Jesse Oster and Todd Gelatka combined to shut out Yuma over the final two innings to lock down the victory and stop the Outlaws road losing streak at five.
Loop (8-4) allowed just one earned run in picking up the win...Yuma starter Eric Maydew (4-3) was charged with the loss. The Outlaws had nine hits on the night, with Nava and Pierson chipping in with two apiece (Nava extending his current hitting streak to 14 games)...Matos went 3-for-4 to pace the Scorpions eight hit attack. Thursday's win improved Chico's second half record to 11-17 and overall mark to 36-30...Yuma fell to 18-10 in the second half and 39-27 on the year (the Scorpions also missed a chance to pick up some ground on first place Long Beach in the GBL's second half title race; the Armada was beaten by St. George Thursday 6-2). The Outlaws go for the series split Friday in the finale of the four-game set...Chico will send rookie left-hander Matt Campbell (1-0) to the mound, with Yuma countering with righty Steve Soja (6-3). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
