Orange County Flyers News Release
Flyers pitching is rocked by the Silver Sox offense, giving up runs early and often in a 11-6 Flyers defeat.
Starting pitcher Mike Woolery (1-1) and the Orange County Flyers were undone by a 6-run 3rd inning they could have avoided if not for a wild pitch on a strike 3 call that allowed the Reno Silver Sox to score 5 more runs in the inning and catapult them to a 11-6 victory over the Flyers on Thursday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
Silver Sox LF Ryan Kowalski led-off the 1st inning with the 1st of his 4 run-inducing hits of the game with a 1-out single up the middle. He went on to steal 2nd and then scored on RF Juan Senreiso's RBI double to right-center to make it 1-0 Silver Sox.
The Flyers responded in their half of the 1st inning with solo home runs by both 2B Dave Bacani (his 4th of the season) and LF Rich Pohle (his 8th of the season) to get their one and only lead of the game at 2-1 after 1 inning of play.
The game turned in favor of the Silver Sox in the 3rd inning, as the Silver Sox scored 6 runs, with 5 of them coming after what should have been the last out of the inning.
Kowalski started off the inning with a double to right and then Senreiso singled to left and score Kowalski again to tie the game at 2-2. Then, with 2 outs in the inning, 1B Adam Amar struck out, but the pitch got past Flyers C Buddy Morales for a wild pitch on Woolery. The wild pitch would prove costly as 2B Mike Done immediately lined a RBI single up the middle to score Senreiso and get the Silver Sox the lead 3-2. The Silver Sox continued to make the Flyers pay for the mistake as they piled on 4 more runs to make it 7-2 after 3 innings.
The Flyers scored runs in the 4th inning on a 3B Brett Thomas RBI triple, in the 5th inning on a 1B Scott Goodman 2-out RBI infield single, and in the 7th inning on a Morales sacrifice fly, but it wasn't nearly enough as Kowalski and the Silver Sox offense led the way to the 11-6 Silver Sox victory.
Kowalski went 4-5 with 4 runs scored to lead the Silver Sox attack and starter Nick Moran (4-3) went 6 innings and gave up 4 earned runs on 12 hits to get the win.
LF Rich Pohle went 3-4 with a RBI, 2 runs scored, and a home run to lead the Flyers offense and starter Woolery only lasted 3 innings while giving up 9 earned runs on 10 hits in the Flyers losing effort.
The loss was the Flyers 3rd in a row and dropped them to 14-14 in the 2nd half of the season. They continue with their final home stand of the season tomorrow against the Reno Silver Sox at 7:05 at Goodwin Field. Don't forget to catch all the action at orangecountyflyers.com.
