Missouri River Otters News Release
In front of a season-high crowd of more than 5,000 people at the Family Arena, the Missouri River Otters lost Saturday night against the Kansas City Outlaws by a 7-4 count.
The Outlaws took an early lead when Mike Murray skated up the right wing and fired a low wrist-shot behind River Otters goaltender Jason Tapp. Missouri came right back and tied the game when Mark Odut took a terrific pass from Barrie Moore and slipped a backhander between the pads of Outlaws goaltender Jan Chovan. Kansas City responded by snatching back the lead when Derek Kern rifled a low shot between Tapp's pads. But again the River Otters tied the game, this time directly following a face-off in the Kansas City zone. The puck went back to Mat Snesrud, and the all-star defenseman hit Lars Pettersen with a pass at the side of the net. Pettersen partially fanned on a shot, but the puck went right to Moore, who guided the puck into the net for his 12th goal of the season.
The second period was dominated by the Outlaws, as they scored four goals to take a commanding 6-3 lead. Mark Lee, Jason Ruff, Ruslan Borysenko, and Briane Thompson all scored goals in the middle period for the Outlaws, while only Lars Pettersen could dent the twine for the River Otters. Tapp was pulled after the Outlaws fifth goal of the game.
The River Otters had the jump in the final period, and narrowed the gap on the power play. Riku Varjamo found Odut with a pass in the slot, and the all-star winger rang a shot off the post and into the net. That was all the third-period offense the River Otters could muster, Ruff added an empty netter, and the Outlaws skated off with the 7-4 victory. Jan Chovan made 22 saves in the victory, while Tapp suffered the loss.
The River Otters next game is Wednesday, January 26 against the Rockford IceHogs at the Family Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 CST, and all the action can be heard on KSLQ 104.5 and the B2 Webcast, located at www.riverotters.com.
