Outlaws Acquire Five in 2007 College Draft

Denver-June 1, 2007 - The Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse selected five players in Thursday's 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft. The Outlaws picked University of Maryland-Baltimore County attackman Drew Westervelt with their first selection, the fourth overall. Denver received that pick from Long Island and Outlaws General Manager Brian Reese is enthused about the potential of Westervelt.
"He was one of the best, if not the best offensive player in the draft," Reese said. "He really stuck out in the last couple of all-star games and is a terrific shooter with great stick work."
With its second pick (14th overall), the Outlaws selected Zachary Jungers, a defenseman from Princeton. Jungers, the leader of the nation's top-ranked defense in 2007, was recently named a USILA first-team All-American.
"Jungers is a great one-on-one defenseman and he is also a solid team defender," Reese said. "He will fit in well with our system and could turn out to be one of the best in this draft class."
In the fourth round, with the 39th overall pick, the Outlaws chose Jesse Schwartzman, the 2007 NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Schwartzman, a goalie, anchored the Johns Hopkins defense on the way to their ninth national championship title.
"Here is a guy who has big game experience," Reese said. "He showed at Hopkins that he is a great team leader and I can see him coming in and pushing guys for their job."
The other collegiate players picked up by the Outlaws include midfielder Scott Sowanick (Princeton) and Peter Hein, a midfielder out of Vermont.
Now that the draft is complete, the Outlaws resume play on Saturday, June 2, on the road against the Chicago Machine.
