Evansville Otters News Release
Evansville, IN-Former University of Evansville pitcher Scott Souther, who signed with the Otters' last weekend, was signed this afternoon to a free agent contract by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Souther joined the Otters last Saturday and started against the River City Rascals. Souther lasted five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) in a game that spanned two days as rain caused the contest to be suspended in the bottom of the first inning.
Souther concluded the 2006 season with a 7-1 record, three saves, a 2.10 ERA, and 48 strikeouts in 55.2 innings for Purple Aces, leading UE to the Missouri Valley Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Souther just missed having enough innings to qualify for the ERA title this spring, a category in which he would have led the conference. Souther's last outing was on Sunday, June 4, when he picked up the victory over Virginia in an elimination game by allowing three runs in seven innings while striking out eight.
Souther's signing shuffles the Otters' starting rotation. His former UE teammate Michael Greenhouse will start as scheduled tonight, while Jake Haggerty will get his first professional start on Thursday night with newcomer Matt Restivo making his professional debut on Friday.
Souther's signing marks the third time in the past four seasons that the Otters have lost a player to a Major League Baseball organization after less than a week of action. In 2003, shortstop Casey Benjamin appeared in five games before being signed by the Texas Rangers while left-handed pitcher Justin Jordan made one appearance last season before signing with the Seattle Mariners. Benjamin is currently with the double-A Frisco Roughriders in the Rangers' system, while Jordan is with Seattle's high-A club, the Inland Empire 66ers.
The Evansville Otters were voted a Platinum Winner in the Evansville Courier & Press Reader's Choice Awards and Best Sporting Event by the readers of Evansville Living magazine in 2005.
