
Otters settle into home stand

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League are set to begin a three-game home stand Wednesday night at the Tullio Arena as they play host to the Guelph Storm. All fans attending the game will receive a free Otters Team Poster Calendar. Friday the Otters take on the Brampton Battalion with a select number of fans in attendance receiving a free gift courtesy of TGI Fridays. Saturday it's Career Concepts Night as the Otters face Kitchener Rangers featuring a special appearance by SpongeBob SquarePants presented by Time Warner. All three games begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the games are on sale now at all Erie-area TicketMaster locations as well as the Civic Center Box Office.
The Otters (11-32-1-2) have won two of their last three games, including an exciting 6-5 shootout win over Guelph on Sunday afternoon. Zack Torquato had a goal and two assists to pace the Otters attack while Kevin Beech turned aside 47 shots to earn the victory.
Jordan Skellett, Justin Hodgman, Nick Palmieri and Ronny Rogers all scored in regulation for Erie. Torquato, Skellett and Palmieri were all successful in the shootout.
Guelph enters Wednesday's game with a 23-15-2-6 record. This will be the final meeting between the Otters and Storm this season with Erie leading the season series 3-2.
Defenseman Drew Doughty leads the Storm offensive attack with 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points. Netminder Thomas McCollum leads the OHL with a 2.21 goals against average.
Brampton makes their first and only trip to the Tullio Arena on Friday night. The Battalion are in the midst of a four-game losing streak (0-3-0-1) and currently sit fourth in the Central Division with an 18-25-1-4 record. John Hughes is the team's leading point-getter with 17 goals and 34 assists for 51 points. Defenseman John de Gray was recently named to the OHL All Star Classic to be held next week in Saginaw.
Kitchener enters weekend action owners of a 31-13-1-2 record and only one point behind the London Knights for first in the Western Conference. Steve Downie, acquired at the trade deadline from the Peterborough Petes, leads the Rangers offense. In his first five games with Kitchener, the two-time World Junior Championships gold medalist has collected four goals and seven assists for 11 points. In 33 games this season Downie has 27 goals and 43 assists for 70 points.
